Buffalo Waterfront Canal Side

Buffalo, NY

The Buffalo Waterfront was once a bustling industrial port that marked the Western terminus of the Erie Canal and served as a major gateway to the west. EE&K was enlisted by the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation to create and implement a development plan to bring life back to the water in the City of Buffalo. Canal Side envisions a new mixed-use district that re-connects downtown Buffalo to its waterfront.

Combing 1.1 million square feet of cultural, entertainment, retail, commercial and residential uses on an approximately 20-acre downtown site, Canal Side establishes a vibrant new center of activity in Buffalo’s historic inner harbor area. It is the signature piece of a larger Buffalo Inner Harbor Plan that will eventually include several other new residential and mixed-use districts. A singular urban waterfront experience, Canal Side will offer Buffalo’s residents and visitors opportunities for dining, shopping, culture, outdoor recreation and fun – all within a dramatic public environment where city streets lead into re-watered canals jammed with boats, towpaths, great sheds and bridges.

Focused on “places” rather than individual buildings, Canal Side invites visitors to travel from one place to the next, experiencing a wide variety of environments and vistas along the way.
