Houston Main Street Square

Houston, TX

Houston Main Street Square comprises three city blocks spanning from Dallas to Walker along Main Street in the center of downtown Houston. Originally conceived of as part of EE&K’s Houston Main Street Master Plan project, it is a civic “room” that integrates the new light rail transit implemented along the Main Street corridor.

The two flanking blocks contain station platforms that are partially closed to vehicular traffic. They invite pedestrian activity along bold paving patterns, shaded seating areas, and rich landscape motifs. The central block crescendos with a choreographed water feature composed of a series of arched water jets that are activated by the motion of the trains passing through. Smaller jets animate the fountain intermittently with the train schedule. This dramatic fountain carries forth the tradition of water features in Houston that symbolically connect the city to the surrounding bayous.
